A hashtag is used in social media (mainly in twitter and instagram although facebook now uses them too) as a way of categorising, grouping and theming pieces of content. If you add a particular #hashtag to your content it can be associated and found alongside other people’s content that have that same #hashtag or theme.
A hashtag is the # symbol plus a word or phrase with no spaces that demotes what the post or image is about or what word / theme you want your content to found under.
Hashtags can often be found at the end of a tweet.
Images in instagram can have lots of #hash tags associated with them.
eg #inspirationalquotes #coachingmodels #icf
The hashtag is the new hyperlink
A hashtag allow social media users search and to filter conversations around a particular topic. By clicking on that hashtag a search results page with come up with all posts or images containing that same hashtag / topic. eg #hilaryclinton or #earthquake
Brands use hashtags to group content about their own brand and people use brand name hashtags when writing about a particular brand, person.
For example #brandname e.g. #cocacola or #obama will bring up everything people are saying about Coca Cola or Barack Obama
Markets use hashtags to spread promotions or ideas e.g. P&G started a #thankyoumom which had pictures of athlete and their moms. This prompted other people to post pictures of their mom’s using the same hashtag and encouraging engagement with the P&G brand.
You can create a memorable short unique hashtag which allows people to follow what’s happening at a live event.
You can use existing hashtags to categorise your content or you can hijack a #hashtag so that other people see your content when searching on a particular topic
e.g. you could write something and relate it to #oprah
“Turn your wounds into wisdom. #Oprah.”
If you clicked on that tweet it takes you to a website which sells inspirational things… t-shirts, quotes etc.
